CPT 98941: chiropractic spinal adjustment, 3 to 4 regions. What Medicare pays and what to ask
Chiropractic bills depend on how many spinal regions were treated. Here is what 98941 means and the Medicare rate.
What this code means
CPT 98941 is a chiropractic manipulation of the spine in three to four regions. The one-to-two region code is 98940 and the five-region code is 98942.
Medicare covers manipulation of the spine by a chiropractor. Other services at the same visit are usually not covered.
Why the bill can be much higher than the Medicare rate
The number of regions treated sets the code, so it is worth checking.
Extras such as exams, X-rays or other therapies may be billed separately and may not be covered.
| If a line is billed at | It would be |
|---|---|
| 5x the Medicare rate | $192.05 |
| 10x the Medicare rate | $384.10 |
| 20x the Medicare rate | $768.20 |
The Medicare rate is a published benchmark, not a legal ceiling on what a provider may charge. Our free scan flags a line as worth a closer look when it is billed at more than 10 times the Medicare rate.
